Swiss Made and Swiss Movements Meaning

Swiss Made Watches

Watchmaking is one of Switzerland’s most important industries. Swiss watchmakers highly value this reputation that has taken them centuries to earn.

The country has some special rules for watchmakers that are designed to keep the country’s stellar reputation for manufacturing quality timepieces intact.

In order to be designated 'Swiss Made', a watch has to meet stringent industry standards for accuracy, reliability, water-resistance, shock-resistance and aesthetic quality.

When you buy a Swiss made watch, you’re acquiring an item that meets stringent Swiss legal standards for quality.

Swiss Made Watch: To qualify as "Swiss Made", a watch must have been assembled, adjusted and inspected in Switzerland. It must contain a Swiss movement that has been encased in Switzerland. At least 50% of the value of all parts and its movement must have been made in Switzerland. Sixty percent of the overall production costs of designing and assembling a watch must be Swiss-based.

Swiss Made Movement

A Swiss made movement has been assembled in Switzerland, has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland, and Swiss made components constitute at least 50% of its total value. Swiss made movements are considered the highest movement quality standard. They include mechanical, automatic and quartz.

Luxury Swiss watches are highly desirable as Switzerland is reputable for high quality watch making. Elegance, class and quality come to mind on seeing the label on a watch.

With the globalization of the watch industry, it has been important for Switzerland to maintain its high standards and the rules are getting stricter. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry has proposed to strengthen the regulations so that at least 80% of the production cost of a mechanical watch would be attributed to operations carried out in Switzerland in order to label it “Swiss Made.” For electronic and quartz watches, at least 60% of the production cost would have to take place in Switzerland.
